Kintaikyo 錦帯橋 and Chinese Zen Monk Duli Xingyi 独立性易

Kintaikyo 錦帯橋 built in 1673 was recently in the news because it was damaged by a careless motorist. This famous arch bridge was inspired by a similar bridge over the West Lake in Hangzhou, China. Chinese monk Duli Xingyi 独立性易, commonly known as Obaku Dokuryu, who hailed from Hangzhou and was a disciple of Yinyuan Longqi 隐元隆琦, contributed the design idea to the third Iwakuri Lord Kikkawa Hiroyoshi (吉川広嘉, 1621–1679).

Signed Ōbaku Kōsen sho 黄檗高泉書 (Written by Ōbaku Kōsen) with seals at top right Rinzai seishū 臨済正宗 (The true Rinzai line) and at bottom left ichiji Kōsen 一字高泉 and Shōton no in 性潡之印

Heinrich-Heine-Universität Düsseldorf has a private collection of Obaku Art. He is planning to publish a catalog of his collection. We worked together recently on this piece by Gaoquan Xingdun from his collection.
