Ming-dynasty Style Chanting in Today's Manpukuji
It is amazing that Japanese monks in today's Manpukuji 萬福寺 in Uji 宇治 still chant liturgy in Chinese pronunciation. I recommend this short video to study the liturgical tradition Yinyuan Longqi 隱元隆琦 brought to Japan. Pay attention to 5:00'' and see how a monk chanted “謹白大眾, 生死事大,無常迅速,各宜醒覺,慎勿放逸。” in recognizable Chinese. It is clear that today's Chinese monastic liturgy originated from the seventeenth century.

Chinese-style Chanting of the Heart Sutra by Japanese Obaku monks
When Yinyuan went to Japan in 1654, he also brought the Chinese-style chanting method to Japan which has been preserved in Manpukuji today. We heard the chanting during the summer of 2017. Here is an example of chanting the Heart Sutra in Chinese by Japanese Obaku monks. The Chinese pronunciation can be clearly heard.

Yinyuan's Mount Fuji Garden at Manpukuji
I was delighted to peek inside the East Abbot's Compound 東方丈 at Manpukuji when I visited Kyoto in early June 2017. If I am right, the garden is the famous Mount Fuji Garden Yinyuan built. Yinyuan felt deep affection towards Mount Fuji 富士山 and wrote several poems about it. See my another post Yinyuan and Mount Fuji.

Obaku Exhibition at Manpukuji Bunkaden
It was my great pleasure to attend the special Obaku Art Exhibition at Manpukuji Bunkaden 黄檗山の名宝と河口慧海生誕152年記念・松本章男寄贈資料記念展 which marked the 152th birthday of the Obaku monk-traveler Kawaguchi Ekai 河口慧海 and was supplemented by books donated by author and essayist Matsumoto Akio 松本章男. Although it was late, Tanaka Chisei 田中智誠 osho extended the exhibition for a week to allow me, Prof. Narusawa Katsushi 成澤勝嗣 and his students from Waseda University to see it. Many thanks to Tanaka san's guide and Ms. Yang Kuei-hsiang's 楊桂香 translation.

Special Exhibition on Fushimi castle and Yodo castle 伏見城と淀城 at Kyoto City Archaeological Museum 京都市考古資料館
During my stay in Kyoto, there was a special exhibition on the Fushimi castle and Yodo castle 伏見城と淀城 at Kyoto City Archaeological Museum 京都市考古資料館. Because Manpukuji 萬福寺 is located close to these two strategic towns in southern Kyoto, it is very important to understand the history of these two castles. The rise of these two castles has a lot to do with the transportation, fishing industry, and military actions during the Edo period. In front of the museum, there was a huge stele on Nishijin 西陣 textile. The building used to be a museum for Nishijin textile industry.

Obaku Zen Master Gaoquan Xingdun's 高泉性潡 Calligraphy at Harvard Art Museum
Two weeks ago, when I visited the renovated Harvard Art Museum, I saw Obaku master Gaoquan Xingdun's (1633-1695) calligraphy is on permanent display. It reads "Emptiness Drives Iron Boat 虛空駕鐵船". The phrase was taken from Chan Lamp Transmission Records during the Jingde Reign (No. 2076 景德傳燈錄 (卷17) T51, p0342b). For details, see Harvard cataloging information online. Gaoquan was the fifth abbot of Manpukuji and served Yinyuan as an attendant and secretary for a long time.

Etching of Manpukuji at Petrie Rogers Asian Fine Art and Antiques in Tucson
In Laurie and Waynor's collection at Petrie Rogers Asian Fine Art and Antiques in Tucson, there is indeed a work related to Manpukuji by contemporary Japanese artist Tanaka Ryokei. Little know about how the artist produced this work and his connection with Manpukuji. Laurie said he lives in Kyoto, then it makes sense that he went to Manpukuji often. Maybe people who know Manpukuji well can tell from where the artist made the sketch. The artwork is on sale in the gallery.

Glad to know through Dr. Yang Kuei Hsiang that there is another exhibition on Itō Jakuchū's 伊藤若冲 paintings in Tokyo. There are about 70 items by him and other painters on display. He was a great Edo period painter who had been influenced by the Chinese painting style, probably influenced by Chinese monks in Japan as well. He must have connections with Manpukuji. He painted Ingenmame which I have introduced in my previous post on Ingenmame 隠元豆 painted by Itō Jakuchū 伊藤若冲.

Obaku Archbishop Ven. Inauguration Ceremony in Oct. 27, 2015
On Oct.27, 2015 (today), a new Obaku Archbishop Ven. Kondo Hiromichi近藤博道 will be inaugurated as the sixty-second abbot of Manpukuji. I am always fascinated by the ritual ceremonies of the Obaku sect in Japan and wondering how much have been preserved since Yinyuan's time. The agenda below shows the basic structure of the ceremony still maintains some elements from the seventeenth century. It will be a great topic to do religious and ethnographic research. The inauguration ceremony of the Sixtieth generation abbot Sengoku Taizan 仙石泰山 on Oct. 28, 2001 has been put on Youtube and a link is provided below.

Mystery of Master Tiechuan 鐵船, who was the Last Eminent Chinese Monk invited by the Edo Bakufu to Japan
![]() |
| China National Library, Beijing, Beihai |
In Sept. 15, 2015, I was doing research in China National Library in Beijing for the Obaku canon preserved there and accidentally discovered the recorded sayings of Tiechuan, which was reprinted during the Republican period. It appears to be a rare book and was not included in any other publications, including the Jiaxing canon. I believe that this new discovery can supplement chapter 7 of my book.

Prof. Hayashi Masako's 林正子 Study of Obaku Sculptor Fan Daosheng 范道生 and His Father Fan Jue 范爵
| Fan Daosheng's Maitreya Sculpture |
Prof. Hayashi's article is not a simple biography of him and his father. Rather, she built a rich context to put Fan and his father in the complicated maritime politics and culture among China, Japan, and Vietnam. Through her work we now know that his father Fan Jue might have migrated to Vietnam between 1651-1654 and lived in the China Town at Hoi'an 會安 under the aegis of the Ngyuen regime. He was an active member of the Ming loyalist community Mingxiangshe 明香社. He and his son even helped to build statues and bells for Japanese temple Matsumotoji 松本寺 in Japan Town patronized by Japanese merchant Kadoya Shichirōbee かどや しちろうべえ 角屋七郎兵衛. The complicated situation can be seen from the following chart Prof. Hayashi created.

Talk at OSU on Yinyuan
I forgot to announce the talk I just gave at OSU last Friday.
Reading Religion as Event History: Chinese Monks, the Pirate
King, and Japanese Shoguns in Seventeenth-century East Asia
Presented by Jiang Wu, associate professor, Department of East Asian Studies, the University of Arizona (Tucson)
Abstract: Situated at the margin of East Asian political
history, religion rarely shaped the course of history as significant events. However,
when religion did intersect with the secular power, it is difficult for
scholars to fully understand its meaning. In this talk, Dr. Jiang Wu examines
the historical events leading to the 1661 founding of Manpukuji 萬福寺in
Japan by the Chinese Zen master Yinyuan Longqi (1592–1673), whose
life was involved with Zheng Chenggong’s 鄭成功resistance movement in
Southeast China and the shogunal politics in early Edo Japan. In addition, he
will reflect upon the methodological issues for interpreting religious events
in East Asian history.

Ven. Shengyan (Sheng Yen) 聖嚴 visited Huangbo Monastery in 2002
I was surprised to learn that Ven. Master Sheng Yen 聖嚴 not only wrote an essay on Yinyuan but also visited Yinyuan's temple in Fuqing in 2002, just a year after I visited there in 2001. He wrote a travelogue for this visit which I pasted below. He met the abbot Beisheng 悲昇 who received me as well. Ven. Beisheng has a disciple called Mingkong 明空, who accompanied me during my stay. I thanked all of them in the preface to my first book Enlightenment in Dispute: The Reinvention of Chan Buddhism in Seventeenth-century China (Oxford, 2008).

blurb and backcover of Leaving for the Rising Sun
I am glad that the backcover is ready for the paperback edition. Thank Prof. Lynn Struve for her kind words.
Back cover
“In this wonderfully
informative study, Jiang Wu extends the significance of his previous,
groundbreaking book, Enlightenment in
Dispute, from China into the greater East Asian sphere of the seventeenth
and eighteenth centuries. Through the career and legacy of the eminent monk
Yinyuan Longqi (1592–1673) in China and Japan, Wu penetrates the crisis of
cultural legitimacy that beset East Asia, particularly Tokugawa Japan, after
the demise of the Ming dynasty.”—Lynn Struve, Professor of Chinese History, Indiana
University, Bloomington
In 1654 Zen Master
Yinyuan traveled from China to Japan. Seven years later his monastery,
Manpukuji, was built and he had founded a new tradition, called Obaku. In this sequel to his 2008 book, Enlightenment in Dispute, Jiang Wu tells
the story of the tremendous obstacles faced by Yinyuan, drawing parallels
between his experiences and the broader political and cultural context in which
he lived.
Yinyuan claimed to have inherited the “Authentic Transmission of the
Linji Sect.” After arriving in Japan, he was able to persuade the Shogun to
build a new Ming-style monastery for the establishment of his Obaku school. His
arrival in Japan coincided with a series of historical developments, including
the Ming-Qing transition, the consolidation of early Tokugawa power, the growth
of Nagasaki trade, and rising Japanese interests in Chinese learning and
artistic pursuits. While Yinyuan’s travel is known in scholarly circles, the
significance of his journey within East Asian history has not been fully
explored. Leaving for the Rising Sun provides
a unique opportunity to reexamine the crisis in the continent and responses
from other parts of East Asia. Using Yinyuan’s story as a bridge between China
and Japan, Wu demonstrates that the monk’s significance is far greater than the
temporary success of a religious sect. Rather, Yinyuan imported to Japan a new
discourse of authenticity that gave rise to indigenous movements that
challenged, and led to the eventual breakup of, a China-centered world order.
Jiang Wu is an associate professor in Department of East Asian Studies at the
University of Arizona. His research interests include Chinese Buddhism,
especially Chan/Zen Buddhism and the Chinese Buddhist canon, Sino-Japanese
Buddhist exchanges, and the application of spatial analysis tools in the study
of religion and culture. He is the author of Enlightenment in Dispute: The Reinvention of Chan Buddhism in
Seventeenth-century China (2008).
